Description
In February 2007, Destination Lucca launched Apartment Arancio and boasted it was “the best apartment, in the best location with the best terrace at the best price in Lucca”. Unfortunately for Apartment Arancio, it has been knocked off its perch by Apartment Santa Zita. We now confidently boast this apartment is “the best of the best”. Conceited as this may sound, we believe it to be true.
Apartment Santa Zita is a four bedroom, two and a half bathroom apartment with a huge sitting room, a large dining room and a massive terrace. It is luxurious, elegantly furnished and extremely spacious (more than 230 square metres plus a terrace of more than 40 square metres). The upstairs bedrooms are air conditioned and there is a second roof-top terrace.
The apartment is actually a terra-tetto which means from ground floor (terra) to the roof (tetto). This means that the apartment is the whole building which is very rare for Lucca's centro storico. The ground floor houses two shops which are not part of the apartment (obviously). One is a fantastic local butcher specialiasing in meat from the Garfagnana and the other is a fresh pasta shop selling a vast array of delicious, hand made pasta. Both of these will provide tasty meals during your stay if you are so inclined.
You enter the apartment through a private entrance at street level and proceed to the first floor above ground. The first thing you will notice is the sense of space and quality reflected throughout the entire apartment. The whole apartment has luxurious mahogany parquet flooring and top quality fixtures and fittings. On this level, there is a huge sitting room and dining room which are separated by an open fireplace which is accessed from both rooms, there are large bright windows and the rooms are exceptionally spacious.
The dining room houses an enormous, walnut dining table comfortably able to seat 10 and is complimented by a massive 19th century walnut Tuscan sideboard. The sitting room is comfortable and welcoming with a large sofa as well as an antique lounge suite. There is a large desk for writing postcards and letters as well as full modern entertainment (large flat screed TV with limited satellite access - BBC World, DVD player and CD player). These two rooms play host to an eclectic mix of antique oil paintings and some modern artworks.
Off the hall, there is a powder room (ie toilet and washbasin). There is a kitchen (fully fitted with SMEG appliances and marble benchtops and splashbacks) opening onto an incredibly large terrace. The terrace is more than 50 sq. meters and has a stunning outlook over the Roman walls of Lucca’s famous amphitheatre. A wisteria provides privacy and shade on one side and the the other two walls are flanked by pots of colourful seasonal plants. There is a full range of herbs growing to allow the eager chef a complete choice for seasonings. There is a large teak outdoor setting, seating 8 with a comfortable umbrella for shade from the summer sun.
Still on the first floor, there is the main bedroom suite which comprises an enormous main bedroom with a renaissance walnut bedroom suite featuring a king sized bed, a bathroom and a large walk in robe. The main bedroom has french doors opening on to the terrace.
Upstairs to the second floor above ground, there are three bedrooms (one enormous and two normally sized) and a large bathroom. Each bedroom has been elegantly furnished with antique beds (coupled with new orthopedic mattresses for comfort). Two bedrooms have a wall of built in wardrobes. The largest bedroom has a king sized bed, one has a double bed and the other twin singles. The three upstairs bedrooms are individually air conditioned. Bedroom 2 and bedroom 4 have interconnecting doors.
There is access from this level to a small roof-top roofed terrace which would be a perfect spot to get away from it all. Being on the equivalent height of a third floor, the views are amazing and the outlook is as if you are floating over the rooftops of Lucca.
Apartment Santa Zita is located in via Santa Zita which is a very quiet side street just behind the amphitheatre and only minutes walk to Lucca’s famous shopping street; via Fillungo.
