Apartment del Toro

Description

Apartment del Toro is in an ancient building in a prime location within the heart of Lucca’s historical city. This apartment is on the second floor (third floor American style) and is reached via an elegant and imposing staircase which is believed to date back to the twelfth century.

The apartment itself has no feelings of age, despite its years. It has been totally restored. In fact the entire building has just undergone a two year restoration completed at the end of 2004. The timber beamed ceiling with original terracotta tiles is completely intact. The floors still utilise locally produced terracotta tiles. It is as if nothing has changed, except when you visit the kitchen, or the bathrooms, with are new, modern and state of the art. It is a delightful mix of old and new. Many of the pieces of furniture are genuine Tuscan antiques and they sit happily under modern halogen lighting.

There are two bedrooms. One is set up with a queen sized double bed, the other with twin singles (which can be converted to a queen sized double on prior request). Both bedrooms have an ensuite bathroom (with a bath) and are large and bright. Both are beautifully furnished with plenty of storage for clothing and room to move about. The main bedroom also has a small dressing room. Each bedroom has a large window with a small balcony; just big enough to stand on. From the balcony in the main bedroom it is possible to catch a glimpse of the famous statue high on the top of the church of San Michele.

There is a very spacious sitting room which also houses the kitchen and dining area. Comfortable lounges take in the view over the surrounding streetscape and over the rooftops and into the mountains in the background. There are two large windows with small balconies which allow you to stand outside and view the street. It is a beautiful and typically Tuscan city outlook. Via del Toro winds it way along no straight path, and the houses follow the crooked line of the street. Ancient buildings surround the apartment and there are fresh sights at every glimpse. There is a TV, DVD player, CD player, phone and a high speed internet connection for those wanting all the modern conveniences.

The kitchen is new and spacious utilising state-of-the-art, Smeg, stainless steel appliances (including a dishwasher, fan forced oven and gas cook top). Famous white Carrera marble has been used for the bench tops. It is locally quarried and adds to the authentic Tuscan feel. An antique table with modern chairs and a beautiful Tuscan sideboard complete this area and make dining at home a treat.

There is a washing machine as well as drying and ironing facilities.

There is a feeling of luxury at every point in this apartment. From the super-fine cotton sheets and the thick towels to the mix of beautiful antiques. It is a haven after a long day's sight seeing. Relax in a long bath with a glass of local Chianti wine before stepping out the door to the heart of the city with dozens of inviting cafes and restaurants. Or sit back and relax with the windows open and breath deeply the fresh and mellow atmosphere. What better way to spend an evening?
