Description
This apartment, in the heart of Lucca’s “centro
storico” (literally translated to mean historical centre), has
been in the noble family of Segusti for more than a century. It is a
large, warm and inviting family home in which the owner spent his childhood
years. It is filled with genuine Tuscan antiques and original artwork
by the renowned Lucchese artist Ezio Ricci (grandfather of the current
owner). The apartment accommodates eight adults with comfort and style.
It is the perfect location for a visit to Tuscany and a rare opportunity
to sample the lifestyle of the Italian nobility (the original servant’s
bells are still in every room. Sadly, no one responds when they are
buzzed).
Upon walking into the entrance hall it is clear that
this is no ordinary apartment. The sheer size of the rooms and height
of the ceilings are truly amazing (18 foot or 4.5 meters high). The
apartment is located on the first floor of a building that has its origins (original foundations)
in Etruscan times and is almost 1,000 years old. It has four bedrooms, a
huge double sitting room, dining room, a study (or second sitting room),
two bathrooms and a large well equipped eat-in kitchen. The main bedroom
has a small balcony overlooking the adjacent Piazza. Every room is furnished
with style and original antiques; some in the same positions that they
have stood for more than 100 years. Every room also has a wealth of
original artwork. There are several 17th century pieces and numerous
exceptional pieces from the early to mid 20th century. Several rooms
have spectacular frescoed ceilings which are best contemplated by laying
on the floor and gazing up into them. The sitting room is of breathtaking
proportions. It has to be seen to be believed.
The apartment is located on the Piazza Santa Maria
Foris Portam. In this square, there is the original Roman column which
is famous throughout Lucca as being the winning post for the Roman jousting
competitions. It is commonly known as “Colonna mozza” and
the column is directly below the balcony of the main bedroom. On this
square there is also a renaissance church of imposing bearing and a
grand palace (currently undergoing restoration).
The apartment has satellite TV, video and CD facilities.
There is a large laundry with drying facilities as well. There is a range of adults
and children's bikes for the use of guests.
