Description
At Destination Lucca, we pride ourselves on great apartments, but our latest dilema is which apartment is the best! Apartment Arancio and Apartment Santa Zita were alone in the race for the best, but now, in December 2007 it is our pleasure to introduce Apartment San Giovanni.
Apartment San Giovanni is a three bedroom, two bathroom apartment with a huge sitting room, a massive kitchen with a dining area and fabulous covered terrace. It is luxurious, elegantly furnished and extremely spacious.
The focal point of the apartment is the wonderful terrace which is accessed by a pair of French doors from the sitting room as well as directly from the kitchen. It is a bright and spacious area with a large timber table and seating for eight. The outlook is amazing as it is directly next to the Church of San Giovanni overlooking the central dome. It is not hard to envisage hours lingering over meals soaking up the atmosphere.
The church of San Giovanni is a 12th Centrury building under which was discovered the ruins of an Etruscan village. This has been excavated and can be toured under the floor of the church. A false floor of the church was installed after the completion of the excavation of the ruins. The church now also plays host to the Puccini highlight concert series.
The apartment is located on the third floor above ground (52 steps). There is a small entrance hall off which are the first of two bedrooms. The blue bedroom has a king sized Tuscan antique bed and features a private en-suite bathroom (with bath and shower). The second bedroom is the green bedroom and features twin single beds.
The sitting room is also accessed off the main entrance hall. This is a massive room with twin French doors opening onto the terrarce. Other features are a large open fireplace with original stone mantle and parquet floors. There is a large desk for writing postcards and letters as well as a full modern entertainment system (large flat screed TV with limited satellite access - BBC World, DVD player and CD player). This room play host to an eclectic mix of antique oil paintings and some modern artworks.
Walking through the sitting room, you will find a spacious, light and extremely well laid out kitchen. There is a massive ILVE stove and cooktop and everything required to prepare memorable meals. There is access to the terrace via another set of French doors, enabling easy access and flow.
There is a dining area at the other end of the kitchen with a functional glass top table and seating for six. Original frescoes have been discovered in the kitchen and have been restored and encorporated into the the overall decore. The kitchen also houses an oversized fridge / freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. Without doubt, an exceptional feature is the marble benchtops and an original marble farmhouse sink.
The third bedroom (gold bedroom) is the largest and also features a king-sized antique walnut bed and bedroom furniture. It has direct access to the second bathroom which also opens onto the entrance hall and is shared with the green bedroom.
Apartment San Giovanni is located in Piazza del Battistero; off via del Battistero, which is a very quiet side street connecting Piazza Napoleone and Piazza San Martino. Once a month, this street is home to Lucca's famous antique market where dealers from as far as Rome come to display their wares. There is paid public parking within a few minutes of the apartment.
